Barbara Carole Shatswell Underwood is the mother of country singer Carrie Underwood. She married Stephen “Steve” Underwood in 1968, and the couple raised three daughters—Shanna, Stephanie and Carrie—on their family property near Checotah, Oklahoma.

Carole worked as an elementary-school teacher for about 25 years, while Steve worked at a paper mill. She encouraged Carrie to enter talent shows, made performance outfits for her and supported the audition that led to Carrie’s 2005 “American Idol” win. Carole and Steve have continued to live a private life in Oklahoma and remain close to their children and grandchildren.
