Parents

Anthony Winston Essiedu Esq (father)
- Date of birth: 1941-2004 (age 63)
Paapa’s father, Anthony Winston Essiedu, was a lawyer who returned to Ghana when Paapa was just a baby. Paapa spent time visiting his father, older half-brother, half-sister Antoinette, and extended family in Ghana, but despite his father being a lively, popular figure, he wasn’t very present in Paapa’s day-to-day life.
Tony’s passing in 2004 being just 63, when Paapa was only 14, left a lasting mark on him. Reflecting on his loss, Paapa has shared, “Finding out you’ll never be able to make the relationship what you would want it to be, or that they’ll never meet your children, is a huge thing.”

Selina Essiedu (mother)
- Date of birth: ?-2010
Paapa’s mother, Selina, was a fashion and design teacher and was often described by Paapa as “the most important person in my life.” Despite not being wealthy, Selina worked hard to ensure Paapa had everything he needed. He was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Forest School near Epping Forest, where he enjoyed a happy childhood, made lifelong friends, and received a solid education.
When Paapa decided to pursue acting instead of becoming a doctor—a career path he was initially set to follow—Selina was nothing but supportive. She encouraged him to follow his passion.
Sadly, Selina passed away from breast cancer in 2010 while Paapa was in the midst of his drama studies at Guildhall, but her words of encouragement continue to inspire him.
